Point spread and moneyline: price, margin and risk

A moneyline bet picks the winner. A point spread adds a head start, then the price sets the win rate you must beat.

1 Game time

The moneyline picks the winner

A moneyline bet asks one question: who wins the game. There is no spread to cover and no head start. The price does the heavy lifting.

A negative price tells you how much to stake to win $100. At -150, you stake $150 to win $100. A positive price tells you how much you win on $100. At +130, you win $130.

Every price has an implied probability. At +130, decimal odds are 2.30, so the break-even rate is 1 ÷ 2.30 = 43.5%.

2 The box score

The spread adjusts the score

The point spread gives one team a head start. At -6.5, the favorite must win by 7 points or more. At +6.5, the underdog wins the bet if it wins the game or loses by 6 points or fewer.

  1. 1 Final score: Team A beats Team B 27-21, a 6-point margin.
  2. 2 Team A -6.5: 27 − 6.5 = 20.5. Team A loses the bet.
  3. 3 Team B +6.5: 21 + 6.5 = 27.5. Team B wins the bet.

A half point removes the push. On a whole-number spread, a result landing exactly on the number is a push: the stake comes back.

3 The stat sheet

Why -110 makes 52.4% the line

Many spreads sit near -110 on both sides. In decimal odds, -110 rounds to 1.91. That price means a $110 stake wins $100, or $210 back including the stake.

Break-even rate Probability = 1 ÷ decimal odds

  1. 1 At -110 (1.91): 1 ÷ 1.91 = 52.4%.
  2. 2 At 50%: 0.50 × 0.91 − 0.50 = −0.045, or about -4.5% per dollar staked.
  3. 3 Both sides at -110: 2 × 110 ÷ 210 ≈ 104.8%. The points above 100% carry the sportsbook's margin.
Key takeaway

The moneyline asks who wins. The spread asks by how much. The price tells you how often you must be right.

The turning point

Testing your edge takes volume

A spread at -110 can lose even when the favorite wins the game. The useful number is not the market name. It is your true win rate after the margin.

To find out whether that rate holds, you need volume. Volume does not create an edge. A challenge that lets volume play out keeps you from racing through your picks.

In a challenge, read the rule before the market

A moneyline, a spread, a total or a prop does not tell you whether a challenge is easier to pass. Read the allowed markets, the stake range, required number of bets and loss limits.

The standings below do not rank operators by bet type. They count the real cost of a funded account: challenge price divided by chance of passing, on the steady profile.

How we calculate
  • Three profiles: 54% of bets won and 2 bets a day; 55% and 3; 57% and 4.
  • Each operator is modeled at the stake that gives it the best chance, within its allowed range.
  • Time-limited challenge: the number of bets is capped by the profile's pace.
  • Several phases: the chances multiply.
  • Not simulated: daily loss limits, minimum number of bets, activity targets, consistency rules.
  • Bankroll U is taken at its Combine, the lowest real cost among the offers considered for this matchup, on the steady profile. Five levels: not ranked (higher real cost on the steady profile).
  • Bankroll U: Combine only, which opens the Rookie level at 10% of profits.
  • Fan Funded is taken at its 3 Step, the lowest real cost among the offers considered for this matchup, on the steady profile. 2 Step: not ranked (higher real cost on the steady profile). Blitz: not ranked (too close to call: the gap depends on the exchange rate).
  • GetBet Funded: price shown with the operator's 20% discount, no published end date.
  • Prime Sports Funded price with code PROMO25.
  • Amounts are shown in each operator's own currency, with no conversion. Operators are not ranked across currencies.
  • The math holds for these profiles, not for every bettor.

Frequently asked questions

What is a moneyline bet?

A bet on which team wins the game, with no point spread. A negative price says how much you stake to win $100. A positive price says how much you win on a $100 stake.

What does the spread mean?

The spread is a head start. At -6.5, the favorite must win by 7 points or more. At +6.5, the underdog wins the bet if it wins the game or loses by 6 points or fewer.

What is the difference between moneyline and spread?

The moneyline asks who wins the game. The spread asks who covers the number. A favorite can win the game and still lose against the spread.

What win rate do you need at -110?

You need more than 52.4%, because -110 is about 1.91 in decimal odds and 1 ÷ 1.91 = 52.4%. At a 50% win rate, you lose about 4.5 cents per dollar staked.

Can you bet spreads and moneylines in a prop firm?

It depends on the operator and its platform. Read the allowed markets, stake range, required number of bets and loss limits before you buy a challenge.
